Stephen Paul Alexander, 56, of Des Moines, IA passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016, after a struggle with pancreatic cancer. Stephen was born on August 31, 1960, to M. Paul Alexander and M. Virginia Alexander in Chicago, IL.

Stephen spent many years working as a taxi driver in Des Moines, IA. Later, he worked for U.S. Roasterie for over 10 years before returning to taxi driving before his cancer diagnosis in June 2016.

Stephen was a great lover of music and enjoyed seeing a wide variety of live concerts over the course of his life. One of his favorite traditions was to attend the River Roots music festival in Davenport, IA each year. He was also a sports fan and enjoyed baseball, football, and basketball. He was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Stephen is survived by his brother Tim Alexander (Brenda) of Davenport, IA, his three children Amanda Alexander, Sera Alexander, and Addison Hartmann, all of Des Moines, IA, and his girlfriend of 10 years, Debra Boehm of Des Moines, IA, as well as countless friends.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents.

Sheila LaRae Harman, 48, of Cedar Rapids finished her earthly race and entered into abundant life on April 5, 2008. She loved the life she lived and continues to inspire countless others to do the same.She is survived by her children Sydney, Bond and Tory; husband Tork; parents, Fred and Karen Allen of Oviedo, FL; her siblings, Eric Wayne Allen of St. Petersburg, FL, Brenda John Dreessen of Oviedo, FL, Sandy Dan Justin of Logan, UT; sister by choice, Cathy Dahm; "adopted" children, Aminata Cham of Gambia, Africa and Grant Schnobrich of Cedar Rapids; numerous brothers and sister-in-laws; nieces and nephews; dog Zoey; and a community of friends throughout the world. She was born November 27, 1959 in Washington, Iowa. She graduated in 1978 from West High School in Iowa City and from Iowa State University in 1982 with a degree in elementary education. Tork and Sheila were married June 23, 1984. Sheila earned her masters degree in getting things done. She was a teacher in every sense of the word – not only advocating for others, but giving them tools to thrive on their own. She loved photography, growing flowers and her big ideas – notably Gems of Hope, Inc. "Gems" is a community-supported organization founded by Shelia, Beth Hammell and Cindy Sale which brings hope to cancer patients and their families. Sheila spent the past 3 ½ years fighting cancer; but more importantly, living out her faith, serving and loving others, sowing seeds into the community, and living the life out of her days. Ronald Lee Aubrecht, 61, died Monday, August 10, 2020 of injuries incurred in an accident.

Ron was an equipment operator with Streb Construction Company.

He had a love for animals, the outdoors, especially mushroom hunting, and riding his Harley. Ron especially treasured time spent with his family.

Ron is survived by his son, Cody of West Liberty; his mother, Betty Aubrecht of North Liberty; two sisters, Sherrie Aubrecht of North Liberty and Karen Aubrecht of Colorado; two brothers, Doug (Tina) Aubrecht of Coralville and Kevin Aubrecht of Colorado; nieces and nephews; and his former spouse, Dana Aubrecht.

James E. Augustine Jr. (Auggie/Apple Core), 61 of rural Homestead, longtime resident of this area died suddenly, Friday, February 19, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Jim was born June 22, 1959, the son of James E. Augustine Sr. and Loretta “Bernice” Bradford. Growing up in Coralville he attended West High in Iowa City. On June 7, 1980 Jim married Shirley A. Davis in Cedar Rapids. Jim has spent most of his adult life as an over the road truck driver and diesel mechanic. He was one that looked at life straight on, called it like it was, was never shy to share advice and was always willing to help. Jim could fix anything, he enjoyed working on cars, trucks and motorcycles, fishing with family and friends and being “Grandpa” was the icing on the cake!

His family includes his wife, Shirley; their children, Kim Weiermann (Cory), Anna Augustine (Chad Gatewood), Michael Augustine (Ashley), Elizabeth Weiermann (Joe), Samantha Sherman (Jeffrey) and fourteen grandchildren, Dakota, Ty, Colton, Wyatt, Makayla, Emmett, Kain, Millie, Baylor, Miles, Lincoln, Aubrey, Jeffery and Alayna.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, son, Benjamin; and three sisters, Sherry Bremner, Diane Berg, and Janet Nelson.

Valerie Lynn Barnes, 52, died Wednesday, October 17th at Briarwood Care Center of complications from multiple sclerosis.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am, Monday, October 22nd at St. Wenceslaus Church with Father Robert Striegel officiating. The family will greet friends after 10:30am at the Church, and a time of fellowship will follow Mass. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Valerie was born March 28, 1960 in Fairfield, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Patricia Richardson Barnes. She attended West High School and graduated from Metro High School in Cedar Rapids. Valerie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 19. She moved to San Francisco where she attended college and worked at the Great American Music Hall. Valerie returned to Iowa City in 1987 and had been employed at UIHC, ACT and the Goodwill Store.

Valerie lived her life to the fullest and accepted people for who they are. She was an accomplished pianist, seamstress and had a deep and abiding faith.
Survivors include her mother, Patricia Peyton of Iowa City and two brothers, Ben (Robyn) Barnes of Houston and Paul (Bridgette) Barnes of Coto de Caza, CA;nieces, nephews and numerous friends, especially those at Briarwood Care Center.She was preceded in death by her father and brothers Bill and Michael.

David C. "Dave" Homewood 57, of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, January 8,2017 at the Mercy Hospital Hospice Care Unit in Iowa City.

A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 10:00 am at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Dave was born October 24, 1959 in Iowa City, the son of Dave & Barbara (Dean) Homewood. He graduated from Iowa City West High School in 1978. Dave owned his own business, Homewood Electric with his brother Mike, retiring in 2015.

Dave was a dedicated member of St. Wenceslaus Church and devoted time through volunteer work.

When Dave was not hard at work he enjoyed a great game of golf, an annual fishing trip to Wisconsin, visits to Rhode Island and was a beer enthusiast. Dave began brewing beer in 1994 with his longtime friend and classmate Lon Liebergen. They entered their beers in local competitions and the hobby lead him to several beer festivals around the Midwest.

Dave had a memory like no one else. He could recite the entire roster of the 1966 and 1967 Green Bay Packers, and likely the roster from any other season as well. As an avid Packer fan, Dave had a Green Bay Packer helmet for a mailbox and an entire room devoted to the green and yellow sports team. His Packer room was a shrine that saw not only endless sports games (including the notorious Iowa Hawkeyes Football victory over Michigan State for his 50th birthday) with friends and family but also many fish fries, birthday parties, and endless weekends of card playing. He took several trips to Lambeau field, including one with his mother Barbara for a special tour of the stadium.

Dave was never too busy to help a fellow friend or family member and would always meet you with a positive attitude, infectious smile and laughter. Dave knew a song about every situation and wouldn't hesitate to loudly burst into song no matter where he was.

Dave is survived by his wife, Heidi Wolf; his children, Travis (Estrella) Homewood of North Liberty, Mark Homewood, Alexa (Patrick) Homewood-Weldon and Makensey Homewood all of Iowa City; Mother, Barbara Homewood of Iowa City; three siblings, Carol (Jim) Matthews Of Oshkosh, WI, Janet Homewood and Michael (Julie) Homewood all of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Ana, Madeline and Victoria; former wife, Sandra Hoefer of Iowa City; lifelong friend, Lon Liebergen and his family, all of West Branch.

Mary Ann Hulme of Iowa City died Monday, December 4, 2023, after a short illness. Her children, granddaughter, and siblings miss her kindness, sharp wit, and sense of humor greatly.

A private funeral and interment of her ashes will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Iowa City, IA. A reception will follow the memorial service, from 3:30 – 5:30 pm.

Mary was a 1978 graduate of West High School, Iowa City. After high school she enlisted in the US Army, serving at various installations in the United States and in Germany. She was part of a path-breaking generation of female military service members. In the Army her specialty was the K-9 corps, and she put this expertise in dog handling to good use after her honorable discharge from the military.



Mary was a career employee of the Iowa Department of Corrections, retiring after 30 years of service. She also became a nationally prominent breeder of Corgi dogs, raising several champions, winning numerous awards, and making many friends in this field. Most important, she was the devoted mother of four children, who were the light of her life.

Mary is survived by her children: Matthew Kostiv of Iowa City and Jacob Kostiv(Emma) of Marion, IA; Joey Podhajsky (Jon Robinson) of Terrell, NC; Rebecca Lemonds of Tampa, FL; and her granddaughter Ella Robinson of Terrell, NC. Her family includes her four loving siblings: Sara Hulme (Michael Hardy) of Pittsboro, NC; Emily Mellecker (Patrick) and Janis Russell (Rip) of Iowa City; Stephen Hulme (Gloria) of Raleigh, NC and Coralville, IA. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Ann Hulme.

Mary’s kindness, love, and generosity will be greatly missed by everyone who had the good fortune to know her.

Keith was born September 27, 1959, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Cletus Klein and Jeanne (O’Brien) Seaton. He married Kandi Kennedy on June 11th, 1988, and they together raised a son and daughter.

Keith was a lifelong resident of Johnson County though he and Kandi recently moved to Washington County. He worked for different departments within the City of Iowa City and had just retired at end of December 2023 from the streets and maintenance department after nearly 37 years. Keith took great pride in his family. He loved to be outdoors mowing, camping, kayaking, biking or just playing with his grandchildren. He helped his dad on the farm for several years and would drop anything he was doing to help others. He will be remembered for his smile and quick witty responses not to mention his love of visiting with people.

Eric Larson was born on June 13th, 1960, to Paul and LaVerne Larson in Cresco Iowa. While he was the quietest of their three children, he was born with perfect pitch, along with the ability to memorize every aspect of a song to later replicate, play and rearrange. He fell in love with the magic of music early on, studying the masters – both classical and contemporary. The possibilities of the medium seemed endless to Eric.
 
Growing up in Iowa City, it was just a given that once through primary school, the University of Iowa would naturally follow. There, he majored in Music and was soon playing his euphonium in the University of Iowa marching band, highlighted by helping cheer on his beloved Hawkeyes during the 1982 Rose Bowl. He also soloed during a Bruckner Symphony with U of I Symphony Orchestra.
 
After graduation, he pursued teaching positions without success. Held back by his introverted demeanor and reluctance to promote his abilities as a musician or teacher, Eric ultimately chose to follow a different path. He found employment in food services, specifically delivery.
 
This change of course didn't dampen his desire to create and play his music, nor did it slow him down from wanting to share his gift with others. The time spent driving between deliveries afforded Eric the opportunity to work on his music in his mind. He could hear a new song on the radio during his shift. Then once he got home, he’d pick up his trusty Fender Stratocaster and faithfully replicated what he'd just heard – even put a new spin on it – like he'd been practicing it for months.
 
He was by no means limited to other musician’s creations. Throughout his life, Eric composed and arranged music behind the scenes for the University of Iowa marching band – music that has been played in stadiums and broadcasted around the world. 
 
He also collaborated with his college professor, Robert Yeats, in starting "Tuba Christmas (Holiday Tubas)". From its inception, Eric arranged and composed music for the now annual event, even playing along with his own euphonium in what has become one of the centerpieces of the holiday celebration in Iowa City. Performances are shown on television news broadcasts and available online to reach those living outside of Eastern Iowa. 
 
Although Eric never landed that teaching job he so coveted, he never lost sight of his mission to help others and make the world a cheerier, happier place through his gift. He never asked for compensation for his works and he never copyrighted them, saying that the satisfaction of others enjoying his creations was more than enough for him.
 
Last week, Eric heroically faced the biggest challenge of his life. Due to complications from two damaged heart valves, Eric died on Thursday, June 29th, 2017, in the hospital of the University that he so loved. 
 
Even though he’s gone, Eric’s compositions and arrangements will live on, continuing to teach students and charm listeners alike. Just as they have over the past 40 years.
 
When Eric wasn’t involved with his music or working and the weather was warm and sunny, he could often be found tinkering with and driving his MGB Roadster with the top down.
 
Surviving are his parents, LaVerne Larson and Paul Larson, sisters Janet Larson (John Moes) and Kristen Larson, and her two children.
 
The family and friends visitation was 10:00 to 11:00 AM on Friday, July 7th, 2017 at Lindstrom Funeral Home, 119 2nd Ave SW, Cresco, IA 52136 with the funeral to immediately follow at 11:00 AM.

Daniel John McCurdy was born May 28, 1959 in Fort Dodge. He attended St. Edmonds and later graduated from West High School in Iowa City. Dan then graduated from Iowa Central Community College with a degree in Electronics. For over 25 years Dan was employed with Schumacher Elevator, based out of Denver, Iowa, as longtime repairman. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Mary was born Jan. 25, 1960, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of John and Norma (Buser) Pepper. She graduated from Iowa City West High School in 1978. Mary was united in marriage to Elgie Garthwaite on Feb. 6, 1993, in Marion. He passed away on Aug. 20, 2012. She was so proud to be employed at Cedar River Paper, where she was a motivated and dedicated employee for 12 years. Mary was an avid reader, enjoyed watching Netflix movies with her sister and enjoyed the time spent having lunch with her co-workers. She also enjoyed watching Amber show her horses.

She is survived by her daughter, Amber Garthwaite of Iowa City; and her siblings, Bill Pepper of Dallas, Texas, Ann Rogers of Vinton and Susan (Jim Poggenpohl) Pepper of North Liberty.

Tracy Diane Schulz, 62, passed away Saturday, February 19, 2022 in West Liberty, Iowa.

Tracy was born January 30, 1960 in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of Ralph H. and Twyla F. (Snapp) Ritter. She was a 1978 graduate of Iowa City West High School. In 1979 Tracy was united in marriage to Harold McElderry in Downey, Ia.  Together they had a daughter, KimberLee.  Tracy and Harold would later divorce.

For 20 years Tracy was employed as a sales associate with Kmart in Iowa City. She lived in the Eastern Iowa area since 1973.

Tracy had many talents and found joy in drawing, painting, playing the flute (in her early years) and taking care of her flower gardens most of all. Tracy was a devoted Christian and also enjoyed reading her Bible.

Tracy is survived by her daughter: KimberLee (Bill) Kleinmeyer of West Branch, Iowa, father: Ralph (Viola) Ritter of Springfield, Missouri, and a sister: Kelly (Josh Rosenberg) Ritter of Champaign, Illinois.  Tracy had three grandchildren: Levi, Lily and Chloe Kleinmeyer as well as a niece, Sarah Rosenberg. Tracy is also survived by her long time friend and caretaker Sylvia Sexton. She was preceded in death by her mother Twyla, a sister, Deborah Ritter, her second husband, Dave Schulz and her beloved furry friend, Angel.
